Symptoms of Angina

By jenifer wattson at 2010-04-09 06:20:12
Angina (angina pectoris) is severe chest pain due to lack of blood (i.e., oxygen) in the heart muscle. The main cause is a coronary artery disease called atherosclerosis, or a clogging of the arteries. Angina typically feels like the chest is being strangled. Severity of symptoms may or may not be associated with fatal heart attacks.

In most instances, the angina will subside with rest. If an attack occurs, stop whatever you are doing and rest until it passes. Angina caused by coronary spasm may not respond as well to rest as classic angina. Aside from rest, there are three major approaches to treating angina: life-style changes, drugs and surgery.

Symptoms of angina are hard to distinguish from normal chest pain like heartburn but there are certain signs that tell you that are having an angina attack. Different people would describe angina differently. Most would say that it is not very painful but just a big discomfort. Words used to describe angina are choking sensation, heaviness of the chest, tightening, squeezing or even burning on the torso area. This feeling lasts between one to five minutes. If it is shorter or longer, most probable it is not Angina pectoris. Best way to know is to get an ECG.

Some preventative tips to reduce discomfort and heightened susceptibility to heart attack can include taking breaks when the onset of angina-like symptoms are felt, avoiding large meals or specific heavy foods that tend to trigger episodes of pressure or tightening in the chest, and learning techniques to avoid and/or deal with stressful situations.

There is a form of angina called cardiac syndrome X. In this form, there is neither a spasm or any detectable block in the coronary arteries. In some people, the pain and pressure in the chest may be a result of a temporary narrowing of the smaller arteries of the heart. No one knows what causes this, but it may be the result of a chemical imbalance in the heart or abnormalities in the arteries.

Angina pectoris is the result of myocardial ischemia caused by an imbalance between myocardial blood supply and oxygen demand. In most cases, the lack of blood supply is due to a narrowing of the coronary arteries as a result of arteriosclerosis. This pain is known as angina.

Angina is a chest pain caused by a brief and insufficient flow of blood to an area of the heart. The pain feels as if something were squeezing or putting pressure inside our chest causing a sensation of having a heavy weight on top of us.

Angina and unstable angina is most often caused by plaque and narrowing of the arteries. This occurs because of genetics and cholesterol and or homocysteine levels. Your activity level, the food you eat, and other lifestyle factors can directly affect the levels of plaque on your artery's walls.

There are three types of angina. 1) stable, 2) unstable, and 3)variant It is essential to know the differences among these types.

Coronary artery disease, also called arteriosclerosis, is the biggest single cause of angina. High cholesterol levels, high blood pressure, diabetes and smoking can all aggravate arteriosclerosis and trigger angina.

Drugs have to play a part in treatment either to relieve pain , increase exercise capacity or to treat risk factors such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol and arthrosclerosis

The natural treatment for angina in its acute form, at the time of the pain, is best dealt with by the use of the homeopathic medicine Aconite. Aconite is so good for helping ailments that come on suddenly. Or for ailments that come on after a shock. Both of these conditions can apply to the onset of an angina attack.

The symptoms of angina are hard to distinguish from normal chest pains caused by things like heartburn but there are certain signs that tell you that are having an angina attack. Each person describes their angina uniquely.

Some vitamins and herbs are considered helpful in preventing or treating angina. Herbs thought to be beneficial include: hawthorn, angelica, bilberry, berries, cocoa, evening primrose, fish, flax, garlic, ginger, ginkgo, kudzu, lovage, mullein, oats, onion, purslane, sage, and willow. Vitamins, or vitamin rich foods, thought to be useful include: C, E, magnesium, omega-3 fatty acids, potassium, and selenium.

Whenever the blood supply of the muscular wall of the heart starts suffering, clinical manifestations of CAD - (Coronary Artery Disease) occur. Although there may be a mild blockage in a coronary artery, and thus a depletion in the supply of blood to the walls of the heart, yet this supply may be enough when the patient is at rest.
